Another option is the night ferry between Kiel (Germany) and Oslo. This is a kind of mini cruise ship that even has a swimming pool on board. You depart during the day and arrive the next day (the trip takes about 20 hours). You can book this ferry via colorline.nl. This ferry connection is more expensive than the ferries from Hirtshals and is especially attractive if you see the ferry trip as part of your vacation and it is also an experience with young children.
